A biographical sketch must accompany each nomination and should contain information relative to the nominee's background, affiliation with the mining industry, and those significant contributions warranting consideration. The scope and impact of those contributions should be described. Nominations are accepted from individuals, companies, organizations, universities, or associations. It is tradition that the recipient be scheduled as a featured speaker following the annual PCMIA luncheon.

The above awards were given by the Donald S. Kingery Memorial, Inc.; each scholarship recipient received $500. Beginning in 1986, the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America (PCMIA) assumed sponsorship of this award program. Scholarship recognition increased to $1,000 in 1986, and to $2,000 for each recipient beginning in 1987. The scholarship check and certificate are presented at the annual luncheon of the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute. The following awards were given by the PCMIA: |

The PCMIA solicits nominations from five mining engineering schools: University of Kentucky, West Virginia University, Pennsylvania State University, Virginia Polytechnic and State Institute, and the University of Missouri-Rolla. Nominees must: (1) be a junior or higher level undergraduate in Mining Engineering; (2) be in need of funds to continue education; and (3) have a scholastic record and interest in mining sufficient for reasonable assurance that the recipient will graduate as a mining engineer. Other factors considered are scholastic standing and mining experience.

The above awards given in the past were designated as the Educational Excellence Award. However, with the passing away of Stephen McCann, who dedicated his life to the students in the field of mining, this award was renamed the STEPHEN McCANN MEMORIAL EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD and the recipients are: |

The PCMIA has established a competition for the best senior design project. All mining schools have the requirement that graduating seniors complete a capstone design project to demonstrate their knowledge of engineering fundamentals and analysis of a problem. Competition for the PCMIA award is open to all mining schools in the United States. Nominees are selected by the mining faculty at the institution and up to two students per university can be nominated at the discretion of the faculty. The projects are submitted for judging after review and grading by the faculty. The purpose of the award is to serve as a tangible stimulus for excellence and reward for outstanding effort in the preparation of the senior design project. The first prize is $1,000. Consideration is given to recognition of other submissions and a second and third place may be given at the discretion of the evaluation committee. The award is now a joint award between the PCMIA and the Pittsburgh Section of SME. The following is the chronology of the awards: |
