The selection of a successful recipient is based on the candidate's overall career impact on mine safety and/or health. Judgment includes consideration of contributions, results achieved, and the nominee's commitment to mine safety and health.

A biographical sketch must accompany each nomination and should contain information relative to the nominee's background, affiliation with the mining industry, and those significant contributions warranting consideration.  The scope and impact of those contributions should be described.  Nominations are accepted from individuals, companies, organizations, universities, or associations.

It is tradition that the recipient be scheduled as a featured speaker following the annual PCMIA luncheon.

The selection of a successful recipient is based on the candidate's overall career impact on educational services provided to the mining industry. Judgment includes consideration of contributions, results achieved, and the nominee's commitment of quality mining education. The candidate may be an individual or an organization (educational, private, or governmental).

If the candidate is an individual, the person must be or have been an instructor, teacher, or professor of mining engineering curricula, or a person responsible for providing educational services to the mining industry. If the nominee is an organization, it must be one that provides or has established a commendable, well known reputation for its educational contributions to the mining industry or mining student. A description must be provided of the candidate's impact on (a) mining engineering students; (b) the mining school or mining department; and/or (c) the mining industry and personnel within that industry.

Nominations are accepted from individuals, companies, organizations, universities, or associations.

STUDENT SENIOR DESIGN PROJECT AWARD

The PCMIA has established a competition for the best senior design project.  All mining schools have the requirement that graduating seniors complete a capstone design project to demonstrate their knowledge of engineering fundamentals and analysis of a problem.  Competition for the PCMIA award is open to all mining schools in the United States.  Nominees are selected by the mining faculty at the institution and up to two students per university can be nominated at the discretion of the faculty.  The projects are submitted for judging after review and grading by the faculty.  The purpose of the award is to serve as a tangible stimulus for excellence and reward for outstanding effort in the preparation of the senior design project.  The first prize is $1,000.  Consideration is given to recognition of other submissions and a second and third place may be given at the discretion of the evaluation committee.  The award is now a joint award between the PCMIA and the Pittsburgh Section of SME.  The following is the chronology of the awards:
